The Heartlands 2016 Arts Project focuses on ten young people from refugee backgrounds who use the film medium to tell their stories. Transcending cultural barriers, insights are revealed into the communal nature of humanity. As the global number of displaced persons has risen to over 60 million – more than after World War II – the Heartlands project gives young refugees the opportunity to share aspects of their lives with the broader community. Hailing from countries including Somalia, Burma, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Egypt and Pakistan, the young filmmakers highlight their passions, hopes, dreams and journeys in a series of narratively disparate but emotionally connected short films.
