Vesak is the major Buddhist observance (also known as Vishakha Puja or Buddha’s Day) when Buddhists globally recollect the Lord Buddha’s Birth, Enlightenment & Passing. Victoria has over 100 Buddhist Temples & groups. UN Day of Vesak is when our vibrant and diverse Buddhist family of differing traditions, practices, cultures and languages: Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Karen, Korean, Laotian, Malaysian, Mongolian, Thai, Tibetan, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, gather as one in the City of Melbourne. The day features: offer to Sangha Dana (lunch to Buddhist Monastics); procession with Buddha floats, monastics; and hundreds walking peacefully in traditional costume with flags, banners, sounds of traditional drummers and dancers to the Vesak Celebration in the Town Hall. In 1999 the UN recognized the International Day to acknowledge the contribution Buddhism, one of the oldest religions in the world.
