Cultures and/or faiths:
The Melbourne Ganesh Festival is a platform to bring many communities with diverse cultural backgrounds together and involve them collectively in the celebration of the festival. The festival is marked with the installation of Ganesha clay idols privately in homes, or publicly on elaborate pandals (temporary stages). Observations include chanting of Vedic hymns, prayers, offerings and prasada that is distributed from the pandal to the community, including various sweets. The festival celebrates Lord Ganesha as the God of New Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles as well as the god of wisdom and intelligence. It’s an 11-day event in most of the parts of India. In Melbourne, we celebrate it on a weekend within this festival period. A special Ganesh Idol (five feet tall) is being brought over from India and shall be exhibited on this event day for our attendees/guests to celebrate with us. The festival's objective is to showcase the Ganesh Festival tradition here in Melbourne. The festival also aims to support local/selected charity organisations in raising funds. The main objective of the Melbourne Ganesh Festival event is to spread the message of peace and harmony, celebrate through the spiritual vibes of the festival and present an exquisite picture of multicultural Australia.back to listing >
