Kids can help welcome newly arrived families

ABC news program for children, Behind the News, is launching “The BtN Welcome Book” -a world-first initiative that aims to extend a personal and moving hand of friendship to every new young arrival to Australia.

Welcome packs provided to refugee or migrant families on arrival to Australia contain a lot of important information for parents, but nothing for their kids.

Behind the News, in conjunction with non-partisan not-for-profit group Welcome to Australia, want to change that by creating a book full of colourful and heartfelt welcome messages, pictures and tips written by the kids of Australia.

To help BtN give a warm welcome to newly arrived families, children can draw a creative and original artwork that either:

  • Says welcome
  • Shows your favourite place to visit in Australia, or
  • Illustrates what you love most about living in Australia.

BtN’s favourites will then be published in a book that will then be given to every refugee or migrant family that arrives to Australia as part of their welcome pack, giving young arrivals a personal and friendly welcome to their new home country.
