General information



The Grampians Region covers the area from Bacchus Marsh in the east to the South Australian border in the west, and from Patchewollock in the north to Lake Bolac in the south. It is a geographically diverse and home to stunning parks, rolling hills, historic villages and vibrant cities.  It includes the major regional centre of Ballarat and smaller communities of Horsham, Stawell Daylesford, Edenhope, Great Western, Hopetoun, Kaniva, Nhill, St Arnaud, Warracknabea and Ararat.

The Grampian region currently has approximately 220,880 residents, with the population concentrated in the east of the region, with more than half living in Ballarat and Bacchus Marsh.

The Grampians Region covers an area of 47,980 square kilometres.

Diversity in the Region

The culutrally and linguistically diverse (CALD) population of the Grampians Region is reasonably small. At the 2011 Census, only 4.3 per cent of the total population of 220,880 persons were born in non-English speaking countries (NESCs); and only 3.7 per cent speak a language other than English (LOTE) at home. Italian is the main LOTE in the region with 707 speakers, followed by German (483 speakers), Mandarin (482 speakers) and Dutch (374 speakers).
